Today we’re announcing Radeon Instinct. It’s not merely a new hardware brand, but a new initiative that combines our strength in compute with an enthusiastic embrace of open software.
Think about the footprint you leave online every single day, and then zoom out to a global scale. 500 million tweets on Twitter. 4 million hours of content on YouTube. 4.3 billion Facebook posts. 205 billion emails. It all adds up to a staggering 2.5 Quintillion bytes (go ahead, look it up – it’ll be one of the 6 billion Google searches performed in the next 24 hours) of data generated on a daily basis.
Our ability to generate data far exceeds our capacity to analyze, understand, and make decisions based on that data in real time.
Now we’re creating new machines to look at the data we’ve created with other machines. But it’s not enough to simply analyze it. We want to learn from it. We want to utilize that data to make us smarter as a species. To solve the very real problems affecting all of humankind.
We’ve excelled at understanding machines. For those solutions to materialize, now we need machines to better understand us.
Inside Radeon Technologies Group, we’ve heard our Senior Vice President Raja Koduri say something that’s really resonated: “Our passion is gaming. Our work is professional. Our instinct has always been computing.”
We’ve invested heavily in high performance graphics and high performance compute, and now we’re poised for success in combining these two investments to create solutions. We’re the only company in the industry who can enable true high-performance heterogeneous applications to solve the problem of evaluating and acting on all this data. But we’re also thinking about how we can add value to the entire ecosystem. We are doing that by embracing open software computing platforms, and open interconnects.
We’ve been at our best when we bring great technology and great products to market. Whether it was the first 64-bit x86 processor, the first Gigahertz graphics processor, or the first integrated APU. Those were all positive disruptions in the industry. Our driving goal behind Instinct transcends that, and it’s imperative that what we build is done together with the community, in the spirit of open software. Let’s accelerate the machine intelligence era as a united and enlightened human race.
